Find a skills lesson video from the internet (e.g., from the Teacher's tube) and upload it to our blog or provide us with the link to the video. Taking into consideration the nine events of instruction proposed by Gagne, try to identify the stages in the video, describe them and account for the learning theories underlying each stage.
To what extent do you think this skills lesson illustrate an example of an effective teaching sequence in your own perspective as a prospective teacher, considering the principles of the teaching /learning process and the learning theories that we have discussed in class?

In this video teacher uses Gagne's principle as in below;
1=gain attention= Firstly teacher asks students questions to gain their attention.
2=describe the goal= Teacher explains the topic and what they will do.
3=Stimulate recall of prior knowledge= He says this is a review at the beginning of a lesson, and explains briefly what they learned.
4=Present the material to be learned= he tells students what they will learn during the lesson, and it is vowels in English.
5=Provide guidance for learning, He gives examples, and he uses gestures and mimes.
6=Elicit performance "practice'= He asks questions, and he wants students to guess the meaning of words.
7=Provide informative feedback= He explains students how many vowels English has, and he compares the vowels with other languages.
8=Enhance retention and transfer= He uses jokes to teach the vowels.
9=Assess performance test, if the lesson has been learned. Also give sometimes general progress information : He finally explains the difficulties with internet connection, and he evaluates his students.

ReplyDeleteDescribe the goal: The teacher makes an introduction by describing what they are going to do throughout the lesson. It is a speaking course and teacher uses a PPT presentation to introduce the topic to the students.
Gain attention: After then teachers asks a few questions about the topic to gain students attention. She prefers asking the significance of the object that students are going to talk about.
Presenting the stimulus:She talks about the content of the lesson and the content is also projected on the board.
Present the material to be learned: After asking a few questions to the students she gives the instructions of the discussion that they are going to have and then distributes the texts.
Provide Guidance: She explains what they will do during the discussion. While some of the students discusses about the topic the others are asked to observe them and take notes about their performance.
Eliciting Performance: Teachers asks a few questions just at the beginning of the lesson and then she doesn’t much interrupt students.
Provide informative feedback: After some of the answers she uses some reinforcement like saying ”excellent, great, well done” Sometimes she gives additional information to the comments of the students. Besides, she asks students to give feedback about their friends’ performance and she uses the technique of pair evaluation.
I think these are the instruction events that she has used in the lesson. She hasn’t use the prior knowledge that they have learned or hasn’t enhanced any kind of transfer.

ReplyDeletehttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QirhNeIwQ0w&feature=related
Gain attention: The teacher begins the lesson with a good question which the students want to answer and comment on. She asks “ Is the USA a good country to live in?” and attracts the students’ attention by means of this question.
Informing the learner of the objectives: The teacher doesn’t inform her learners of the objectives of the course and makes a direct beginning.
Stimulate Recall of Prior Learning: Immediately after the first part, the teacher asks social problems in America and writes the answers of the students on the board. In this way, she wants them to link their previous knowledge with the topic of the day and get ready for the lesson.
Present Stimulus Material: Then, she sets up the speaking activity and gives the instructions. She presents her stimulus material and wants her students to create their own “utopia” in pairs. And then, she wants them to present their own perfect society in front of the classroom.
Provide Learner Guidance: At the beginning of the activity, she provides required guidance and gives instructions. Also, she gives specific examples related to the activity and prevents hesitations and unclear points.
Elicit Performance: Throughout the creating a “utopia” activity, learners elicit their speaking and pronunciation performances. They create their own perfect worlds by working in pairs and communicating each other in an interactive learning atmosphere.
Provide Feedback: She provides feedback all through the lesson. For example, while listening to the answers for the first question, she always uses praises such as very good, definitely, great and excellent. These utterances can be considered as feedbacks to the students’ comments. Furthermore, while the learners are on work, the teacher monitors them constantly. She also detects their errors and notes them so as to use in the feedback part. Moreover, she sometimes contributes to their speaking and thinking processes and makes some comments.
Assess Performance: She doesn’t assess the students’ performance by formal methods. In the course of the activity, she praises them and makes comments on their performance orally.
Enhance Retention and Transfer: I think, she doesn’t use this stage in appearance because it is only a speaking lesson based on a specific task and topic. However, the students’ speaking practice in front of the class and this effective lesson will increase their retention on newly-learned words such as “utopia” and helps their transfer to other language skills.
I think, this is an effective, enjoyable and successful speaking lesson. The teacher utilizes the stages of Gagne and teaching strategies in an efficient way and presents a colourful course for her students. The sequence of the stages helps the flow of the lesson and provides a clear pathway for the teacher. This lesson also perfectly fits in humanistic approach with the whole steps. My only criticism is to setting the objectives. The teacher should inform the aims of the lesson in the very beginning. Except this, I think that it is an ideal speaking lesson.

ReplyDeleteI am sorry because I could not upload the video to the blogger.
1. Gaining Attention : Since the video does not start from the beginning I do not have a chance to watch the attract attention part. The video begins with the teacher’s describing the goals.
2. Describing the Goal : The teachers tells to the students what they are going to do in this lesson. She introduce her subject by saying that “… so today we are going to focus on renting an apartment.”
3.Stimulating Recall of Prior Knowledge: She does not talk about their prior knowledge and starts with introducing the activity. Perhaps this is because, the video does not include all of the lesson, it includes only a part of it. The teacher may mention the prior of the knowledge of the students before the video is taken.
4.Presenting Stimulus Material: The teacher gives detailed instructions about renting activity. She groups the students and sets up the activity, The activity will be done with pairs. The teacher assigns the roles of the students as A and B in a detailed way. After she becomes sure about that the students have understood the task, she shows the sheets to the students, give the instructions again and distribute the sheets to the students by assigning their roles.
5.Proving Learner Guidance: In the instructions and activity, the teacher tries to be clear for the students. She helps them in the activity.
6.Eliciting Performance: In this stage, the students try to do their task given to them by the teacher. In this process, they improve their speaking skills and interactions with each other. They read sentences from the sheets and also adds them with their own knowledge. They can encounter with difficulties but it is normal for them because they are in learning process. In the activity, they also switch the role with the teacher’s instruction.
7.Providing Feedback: After the activity the teacher to control their process, asks them “ what apartment did you decide on?” and takes the answers from the students in a way she gives them feedback about the activity taking their reactions.
8. Assessing Performance: The teacher react to the students2 responses by saying “great, ok ,what about …” She gives them little reinforcements during their activity.
9.Enhancing Retention and Transfer: The activity the students did is an authentic one. They can reflect it to their real life conditions. After such an activity they know how to react with such a situation. They can use the phrases ,idioms they learned in their lives.
In terms of teaching a second language, it is an effective lesson. The teacher gives clear instructions for the students. Apart from some points all the stages of Gagne can be understood by watching the video. Since it is a real life situation, it is an enjoyable lesson for the students and also it develops the interactions between the students.

1).Gain attention: Firstly, to gain students’ attention the teacher asks some question about the topic. She asks the main part of the topic and students try to answer.
2).Describe the goal: To introduce the topic the teacher mentions a little to the students. While informing students about the topic what they are going to do in the lesson she uses some materials and shows pictures to the students.
3).Presenting the stimulus: After giving information and talks about the topic that the students are going to do, the teacher makes them to do the activity. The activity will be done in pairs. Then every pair will present their activity one by one.
4).Provide Guidance: For courage students the teacher helps them in their activity and make them to focus on the lesson.
5).Eliciting Performance: Students are supposed to answer the questions asked them. Maybe questions are difficult but working in pairs they can answer easily.
6).Provide informative feedback: Although, students make some mistakes while answering teacher does not discourage them instead of it she praises the students and use praising words like ‘well done’, ‘excellent’. Of course at the time she correct their mistakes and comment on their talking.
7).Stimulate Recall of Prior Learning: In this stage the teacher just explained what they learned and gives some examples from the daily life
8).Assess Performance: Actually, the teacher does not evaluate the students according their real level. So by praising them make the students to learn it willingly:
9). Enhance Retention and Transfer: What the students learned throughout the lesson was convenient and ideal for their level. I think this learning will help them to use the materials in other places.
It was really enjoyable and effective lesson. Students learned many new things from the lesson. It is obvious that the teacher uses the stages of Gagne and teaching strategies in an efficient way and make a convenient place for students to learn.

ReplyDeleteIt is about teaching vocabulary about Valentine's day
Gaining Attention :this is a lessom given throught the internet by a teacher. she gives a nice smile to us and gives information about Valentine's day. She makes students know what the topic is. actually topic can be very attractive when you teach these vocbularies in Valentine week. it would tae students' attention.
Describing the goal: she says that for the sake of Valentine's day, students will play a game and describes the game clearly and say she will ask some questions about the words that she as used.
Stimulating recall of prior knowledge: She gives an example of a question of the game to make students to understand but I think it is not related to students' prior knowledge.
Present the material to be learned: she does not present the materials because it is an online lesoon she just say sentences which belong to the game.
Provide Guidance For Learning: since it is an online lesson, she can not provide guidance for learners and learning.
Elicit performance: Since she just says the sentences, she may not be able to elicit performance of usage of the words by students. maybe, students would get attracted by the words and use them later.
Provide Feedback: she can not give feedback.
Entrance retention and transfer:the way that she says the sentences, uses her mimic and some pictures that she shows may help studentd to remember the words later on.
Assessing Performance: she can not reinforce students because it is just a video for online learning.

As far as I could observe, the teacher makes use of five strategies.
1.gain attention: In order to take sts' attention the teacher introduces herself and says she is there to teach them English. She also says that she went skiing last week and asks sts whether the do skiing or snowboarding.(take their attention to the topic)
2.describe the goal: Teacher tells them what she is going to teach them today. It is sports (talking about sports not how to do them)
3.Present the material to be learned: she tells them they are going to learn which sports we do, which sports we play and which sports we go.
4.Provide guidance for learning: she gives clear examples and explanations about the sports we do, we play and we go. She writes the examples on the board.
5.Enhance retention and transfer: She tries to be quite kind and sympathetic while teaching.
I think, the lesson is quite useful. She teaches quite necessary things which are commonly used in daily life. The lesson will be very helpful in their lives when they use English .

1) Describe the goal: The teacher gives a brief information about what they will do during the class. She shows some PPT and some other materials while taşking about her program for the session.
2) Gain attention: She talks about the program of the lesson and in this part, she asks some questions about the topic and the importance of the topic for the students. With the help of this part, the students have a chance to participate and this provides students to pay more attention to the lesson.
3) Presenting the stimulus: The teacher gives more specific and detailed information about the topic with the help of some visual materials such as PPT presentation. She also gives the situation to the students about the topic which tehy will discuss
4) Provide guidance: The teacher gives the instructions to make people understand the activity.
5) Eliciting performance: The teacher asks some questions but not as many as the questions at the very beginning of the lesson.
6) Provide informative feedback: The teacher encourages the students by saying "excellent, weldone".
I think the lesson is very useful and enjoyable for the students with the help of activities and some visual materials used by the teacher. Also, the teacher did a good job by givin understandable instructions.

1) Gain attention: At the beginning of the lesson the teacher is asking some questions to the students to take their attention to the topic and the lesson.
2) Describe the goal: After the lead in part, the teacher is explaining the students what they are going to go to do in the given minutes.
3) Stimulate recall of prior knowledge: The teacher is asking students some question such as; what is abortion, what are the pros and cons of having a pet to stimulate their prior knowledge and to make them express their ideas.
4) Present the material to be learned: Since it is a speaking lesson, the students are participating in the lesson orally. The teacher is just using the chalk and board while she is introducing the topic.
5) Provide guidance for learning: The teacher is giving examples from her own life. She is trying to encourage the students by asking questions from their own life.
6) Elicit performance: The teacher is encouraging the students with questions and she generally isn’t interrupting them while they are speaking.
7) Provide informative feedback: The teacher isn’t giving feedback too much since the video shows just the beginning of the lesson.
8) Enhance retention and transfer: The teacher is making jokes about her life and she is trying to involve the students into the lesson more and more to help them improve their retention and transfer their prior knowledge.
9) Assessing performance: The teacher is encouraging students' speaking performance by saying them “ok, thank you, and what do you think about…”.

ReplyDeleteIn this video teacher uses Gagne's principle as in below;
1=gain attention= teacher tries to gain the students attention for the lesson.
2=describe the goal= Teacher explains the topic and convey tyhe meaning of what will come later..
3=Stimulate recall of prior knowledge=he covers what they had done in the previous lesson and he briefly comments on them and mention.
4=Present the material to be learned= he is going to teach vowels in English. he wants them to know what they are going to learn in the following time.
5=Provide guidance for learning, He gives examples, and he uses gestures and mimes.he wants to convey the meaning with the aim of using body gestures.
6=Elicit performance "practice'= He asks questions, and he wants students to guess the meaning of words.
7=Provide informative feedback= He explains the vowels and the vowels in other languages. he compares them.
8=Enhance retention and transfer= he makes the lesson more enjoyable via jokes and some funny things
9=Assess performance test, if the lesson has been learned. he mentions the disadvantages of the internet and he briefly comments on the lesson
I couldn't upload the video so here is my link http://videoizle.video75.com/kCRPuc4QPB8/english-vocabulary-how-to-use/
ReplyDeleteFirstly, I want to make one issue clear. My video is online english teaching video so there are no students just one teacher who tells the lesson to the camera
Therefore, I see myself as one of his students and evaluate the lesson according to my thoughts.
1. Gaining attention: When she appears on the screen, firstly she introduces herself. She uses her gestures and mimics successfully and they attract my attention.Furthermore, she tells what she did during the weekend, she went skiing and asks her students "Have you ever gone skiing?" She links her talking to today's subject. It is about sports as you quess. Beginning a lesson in that way warm up the students to the subject and they become more enthusiastic to learn these sports.
2.Describing the goal:She explains her goals by saying " I can not teach you how to do these sports but I will teach you how you talking about the sports."Moreover, she says we use three verbs while mentioning about sports.
3.Present material to be learned: She classifies verbs using with sports into three catagories and write them on the board."play,go and do" She writes sample sentences and positive and negative form of them
4.Provide guidence for learning: After she classifies and writes sample sentences, she mentions important points to show learners how to distinguish them. For example, she says if while doing the sport you need ball , you will use "play" as a verb or the sport ends with "ing" then you use "do".
5.Enhance retention and transfer: When you watch you notice that she is so sweet. She encourages and gives positive energy to her students. She trusts herself. At the very beginning she says " I will teach you English. She was sure about her ability to teach English. Her behavior increases students' motivation to the lesson

1) Gain attention: In order to gain the attention of the students the teachers comes to the class wearing two ties and one of the students asks why he wears two ties, so that there curiosity aroused. This is also good according to Gange since he says curiosity motivates students to learn.
2) Inform learners of objectives: In the video I have chosen there is not any clear attempt by the instructor to inform learners of objectives. At the begginning of the lesson which is not included in the video he may have informed them in some way.
3) Stimulate recall of prior learning: To stimulate recall of prior learning he sometimes waits for the students to complete his sentences with the words they learned before. He also writes only the consonants of a word they know and wants them to remember and complete it. By this way, whenever the context allows them they are expected to remember their prior knowledge.
4) Present the content: To present the content the teacher uses most of the time realia. To talk about ties he shows his ties, to talk about lace he shows his shoe laces. He also uses the board and backs up what he writes on the board by pronouncing it. In short he uses his voice, uses texts and realia.
5) Provide "learning guidance": To provide guidance, he sometimes, for example, gives the class necessary examples so that the students can use them to make inferences in future time to remember the words they are learning that day.
6) Elicit performance (practice): During this class students does not make much practice but when there are words with similar pronunciations, teacher wants them pronounce these words so that he gets feedback for their learning and students have a chance to practice.
7) Provide feedback: For feedback the teacher usually makes comments on the students’ utterances. If they say a wrong word, he says ‘close’ rather then ‘wrong’ which may help them get encouraged.
8) Assess performance: In this video there is not any specific activity for assessment.
9) Enhance retention and transfer to the job: The teacher in this lesson does not make a clear attempt to enhance retention but his repeating the learned concepts and wanting the students repeat them at the end of the lesson may serve this aim.

it is a vocabulary lesson:
Gain attention: teacher start lesson with joke. He is a young teacher so he is energitic and therefore it was easy to get attention for him.
describe the goal= Teacher explains the topic and what they will do.
Stimulate recall of prior knowledge= teacher reminds the students what they have learned previous lesson
Present the material to be learned=teacher writes the materiala that they will cover during the lesson and they will learn numbers in English.
Provide guidance for learning: teacher use information gap. And he does not correct the students’ mistakes he guides them to find the correct answer.
Elicit performance "practice'=he introduces a game to the students and explain how they will play this game. He repeats number many times and wants student to repeat as well.
Provide informative feedback: he informs them whether they do well or not. He tries to raise students’ awareness of the lesson.
Enhance retention and transfer: As I have said before he is very energetic and uses many jokes to make students involve the lesson.
Assess performance test, if the lesson has been learned. Also give sometimes general progress information: at the end of the lesson he repeats one more time and he says “well done, excellent, very good” to the students.

1) Gain attention: Franklin gains attention when he cites someone as standing up to relate about a past greek inventor/ discoverer: here Franklin himself stands and raises his voice.
2) Describe the goal: The goal is to encourage the teachers present to see the importance teaching has on future generations.
3) Stimulate recall of prior knowledge: Franklin cites the past using a Greek inventor/discoverer as his point.
4) Present the material to be learned: Franklin presents the material to be learned using encouragement
5) Provide guidance for learning: Franklin speaks with authority and insperation.
6) Elicit performance: He reminds the teachers, to teach with honour, and to not allow anyone to speak disparagingly about the teaching profession
7) Provide informative feedback: Franklin provides feedback by citing past inventor/discoverer and the comments some one "stood up" and gave
8) Enhance retention and transfer: Franklin enhanses retention by repeating the importance of the teaching profession, throughout his speech.
9) Assessing performance: Here Franklin expects the teachers to continue their work skills based upon the fact that future generations will be influenced positively.

It is a speaking & listening lesson.
1. Gaining attention: The teacher makes an introduction by describing what they are going to do throughout the lesson.
2. Describe the goal: The teacher explains the topic and what they are going to do. They are going to look at the two different versions of the Romeo and Juliet; one of them from 1960s, the other one 1600s. It is a speaking course.
3. Presenting the stimulus: The teacher shows some talking rules which are written on the board and goes over them one by one explaining them to students.
4. Present the material to be learned: After presenting these rules to students, the teacher makes students watch the films of the two versions of Romeo and Juliet, each of which lasts about seven minutes.
5. Providing learner guidance: After watching these two versions of Romeo and Juliet, the students have a discussion in groups. The teacher gives the instructions and explains what they are going to do. They discuss about two different versions of the films with the help of the notes they have taken while they watch the films, i.e. which one is more effective.
6. Eliciting performance: After students have discussed among themselves, the teacher asks questions to the students. In that way, they create a whole class discussion and they can share their ideas. From time to time, she asks questions again and then students tell their opinions about the subject.
7. Providing Feedback: As far as I can see, the teacher doesn’t provide feedback. She doesn’t use ‘Thank you, well done, very good etc’. She says something related to the topic to encourage students after students have talked.
8. Enhancing retention and transfer: The teacher makes comments before asking another question to the students.
9. Assessing performance: There is no activity for that part, so I cannot make a comment about it.
I think that this speaking lesson can be a good one, as the students have the chance to develop their speaking skills. However, the teacher can motivate the students more by providing feedback.

1) Gain Attention : Misterduncan first appears and asks how are you today? Are you ok? I hope so! Are you happy? I hope so..
2) Describe the goal: He then adds says that ‘today we are going to talk about very special subject: being famous!
3) Stimulate recall of prior knowledge: He acts as if he was famous and there is a background music. In addition, he utters some words like ‘star’ ‘celebrity’ or ‘superstar’ which student’s previous knowledge.
4) Present the material to be learned: Misterduncan presents the material to be learned using encouragement and great enthusiasm. By using examples, he teaches new vocabulary.
5) Providing learner guidance: He talks about various ways of being famous. He says you can be famous maybe because you have talent in magic or something else.
6) Elicit performance: As there is no students, it was not recorded in real classroom atmosphere, there is no elicit performance :/
7) Enhance retention and transfer: When you watch, you will see that he has a good sense of humor. As I mentioned, there were no students, there were no activity or feedback part but he makes suggestions as to becoming a celebrity and tells the audience to ‘keep their eyes on the sky’ but ‘their feet on the ground’;) His positive attitute towards audience undoubtedly increases the learning =))
(Also, in the end, he makes jokes about his being famous and says good-bye in a friendly way =)) '

This is a speaking and vocabulary skill lesson.
1- Gaining attention: Teacher starts to teach immediately, he does not ask any questions such as ‘how are you’, ‘how was your weekend’ and so on or he doesn’t make an introduction about what students are going to learn during the course to gain their attention.
2- Describe the goal: Teacher does not explain what students are supposed to do and give no information about the topic.
3- Stimulate recall of prior knowledge: Teacher reminds the students what they have learned previous lesson.
4- Present the material to be learned: As he uses mimics and some act outs to teach the lesson, no materials are used.
5- Providing learner guidance: Teacher’s role is a guide. First he says and acts then he asks students to repeat after him. For instance, he says ‘go to’ by acting it using his hands and head and then he makes students repeat it again and again.
6- Eliciting performance: After teacher says what he wants to teach the students, he asks students to stand up and answer the questions the teacher asks in their own one by one. By the way, he checks whether students have gotten what the teacher aims to teach or not.
7- Providing feedback: After teacher asks students to stand up and answer the questions the teacher asks in their own one by one, he tells them ‘ok, good, well done, thank you’ if he thinks that they are right and he wants all students to applaud their friend.
