LESSON PLAN EVALUATION

1.You also need to examine TWO of the lesson plans submitted by other groups and evaluate it from the following aspects:
a) the appropriacy of the lesson plan format (for the teacher and for the observer)

b) the relevance of the objectives for the teacher/learner activities (Are the objectives stated in the lesson plan well-formed ? /Do the objectives in the lesson plan cover all the activities?)

b) clarity concerning the descriptions of teacher and student activities (can a teacher or an observer follow the teacher and student activities by looking at the plan?)

c) Variety (does the lesson plan include a variety of activities with different interaction patterns, and in different teaching modes (i.e., the pair/group work, individual activities)

d) smooth transition between activities (whether there is a link between the activities)

e) timings ( Are they clear? Do you ‘believe’ them? Do you think they are realistic? )

f) who does what? (Do you approve of the patterns of interaction?)

g) What do you think of the effectiveness of the closure part (the follow-up task and the assessment of learning)?
h) Is it a good plan? (i.e., what would you a) leave out? b) add to? c) bring in? or d) change completely?
i) Do you find their rationale realistic/ In what ways?
j) Is the learners' previous knowledge specified clearly?
k) Are the unexpected problems and their solutions adequately specified? In what ways?

  1. I study the leson plan of MELEK BAŞDAL,DENİZ HANDE ÇAKMAK,SEDA CAN,ÖZGÜL BAŞARAN. They chose young learners in a private school and for the topic they chose colors. I find the topic appropriate for that age.
The format of the lesson plan is appropriate I think, because the parts are clear and you can see what will happen in which part.
The objectives part is clear enough. The group members explain all the steps in that part. Teachers and learners can understand the content of the plan by looking at the objectives part but they may get confused because the order is somehow disorder.
As for the variety, the lesson plan include many activities but the only lack is that there is no group work. Everything is between teacher and the students. I guess this results from learners' young ages.
I can not say anything related to the timing because they did not specify how long an activity takes. I think they should specify their timing.
By these activities students can learn colors in an effective and interesting way. However; Follow- up part could be more clear and related with the topic and also it could be more creative.
The learners' previous knowledge and rationale is clear. They are well-explained. You can understand what is going to happen and what logic is lying behind the activities.
I generally think that it is a good plan but we should try and see how it will work in a real classroom environment.

  2. As for the second lesson plan evaluation, I chose the lesson plan of ELİF,ŞERAFETTİN,ALP,MERTCAN.

They chose young learners in a private school as for the students profile. The topic is special days in Turkey. I actually find the topic a bit challenging for that age. Also my friends inclusde an activity which is related to the dates and it may be a bit harder for the students.
As for the format of the lesson plan, I think it is good because you can see what are steps of the vocabulary teaching and you can also see what is going to be happen when.
I find the objectives and rationale parts a bit short. They could be more clear. Since they don't reflect all the act6ivities, it may be hard for the teacher and the learners to follow the lesson plan.
There are many activities so the variety of the lesson plan is good and it can help students to learn the subject practising over and over again.
There is no group work but the relationship between the teacher and the students are clear and good. The timing runs in with the activities. However; I can not be sure that it is appropriate for a real classroom environment.
I really like the closure part. The follow- up activity encourages the students to learn from outside and it will be better for them because they can apply their learning to the outside actively.
I generally think that it is a good plan. I think after some short arrangements are done, it will be better and more clear.

  3. I wanted to make my comments on the lesson plan written by Melek, Deniz, Özgül and Seda. They preferred the scenario which belongs to the beginner level learners in Sunshine Private School in İzmir and as the theme they selected “Colours”. In fact, beginner level is quite difficult because organizing an effective lesson plan including proper activities for them is a hard work contrary to it is assumed. In addition, these students are hyperactive and have short attention span so it requires a more enjoyable and attractive lesson consisting of various activities and games.
When it comes to my comments on this plan, first of all, I think, its format is quite suitable for the teacher and the observer because except for the time limits, almost everything is clear and all steps are given in an organized way. The teacher can make use of this plan and remember his/her oncoming steps throughout the lesson. It provides him/her with a correct and well-designed pathway in teaching. At the same time, an observer can easily recognize the steps and tasks by looking at this plan. However, I think, setting time limits is one of the crucial points and it should have been described in the lesson plan. The objectives are clear enough because they are defined for every activity but almost every one of them serves for the same aim. May be the purposes of them should be more various and well-formed. I think, the lesson plan is also quite clear in terms of activities. Perhaps, they should have more variety, group/pair works as much as possible for beginners. However, I really like the activities including painting because young learners will love this. Except for the follow up part, every activity has a smooth transition in my opinion. Follow-up part should be more clear and relevant. The patterns of interaction, learners’ previous knowledge, unexpected problems and solutions are described properly and in an appropriate manner, I think. From a general overview, I can easily say that this is a good lesson plan which is prepared with great effort.

  4. MELEK BAŞDAL,DENİZ HANDE ÇAKMAK, SEDA CAN
    ÖZGÜL BAŞARAN' lesson plan:

I think, the lesson topic is appropriate for the learners because they are young learners and just started to learn English so it is the one of the first topics to teach to such learners.
As the topic is not a complex one the objectives will cover all the activities.
I think students will enjoy very much as their activities are colorful:)
they use different materials to make student awake during the lesson because they state that students are easily distracted.their rationales are realistic because they will actually do what they say to do. they will make use of visuals and etc.the only disadvantage of this plan is timing they may exceed the time, I think. However generally it is a really good plan and maybe I may use it in the future:)

  5. I study on the lesson plan of Özge, Nurten, Aycan and Begüm Abalı.They chose young learners, their level is beginner. They
integrate listening, speaking, and vocabulary teaching.I really like their activities. They are enjoyable. Especially in the lead in part to warm up students to the subject teacher brings two pictures one of them is colorful and the other one is black and white. It is very creative and students will understand the importance of color. As students are young, they are very hyperactive so it is diffucult to attract their attention. However I see that my friends chose very suitable activities for them.
I am sure they will enjoy and learn subject. Furthermore, my friends used a lot of visual things because they want to appeal their
visual intelligence and they also used song to appeal their musical intelligence thus students have a chance to repeat the colours
several times and they easily keep in mind the colors. Students' singing the song is very good idea so they have a chance to pronounce
the colors themselves. Chain drill activity is useful for their speaking. Students both ask question to their friends and answer the question which their friends ask.Twister game is the most important one. This game shows whether students remember body parts and they learn the colors.Consequently, my friends' objective and rationale are in compatible with
activities. They appeal students several intelligence successfully. They wrote in "anticipated problems" part "Due to their hyperactivity and short attention span problem, they can be easily distracted".
My friends solved this problem by using colorful and interesting activities. Their pre-requisite knowledge part quite appropriate with students level.I think timing has problems. It isn't realistic but this is not my friends' fault. We didn't determine the time. They did their best to distribute the time appropriately.
They also wrote interaction part appropriately. Their follow up is relavant to subject. I predict that students will most like contingency part. They paint a butterfly on their own.As a result, it is a good plan, well prepared and I have nothing to add or change in it. I congratulate my friends.

  6. Secondly I study on the lesson plan of Gülşen and Canan. Their students' level is elementary and they are students in METU's prep school. Their lesson plan isn't integrated one. They focus on just speaking but I really like the subject.I am also interested in movies and I am sure students want to talk about it. As it is a broad subject, they can speak easily. My friends gave necessary vocabularies to their students to help them while speaking. Students make matching activities so they learn these new vocabulary properly. Also teacher gives enough clues to encourage them to speak.I like most listening sondtrack activities. It is quite enjoyable and competitive.Teacher's explanation about this movies is useful for students because they keep in mind them and use while speaking.Grouping is quite appropriate for the speaking activity but teacher should wander around to prevent students' using their mother tongue.Competition is a good choice to
regain students attention to the subject.Follow up and contingency part are in compatible with the subject. As a result activities are quite appropriate with their rationale and objectives.
They adress students intelligences succesfully with these activities. However, there is timing problem. For instance, 5 min is too short for the post speaking activities.Their anticapeted problem includes technical problems. My friends give good solution for them. However, it can be problems related to the activities. For
example in the competition games, if the students doesn't know the movies belonging the genre teacher ask, they will be bored. It could be alternative games for this activity.Pre requsite knowledge is appropriate with students' level. If I have chance to add something, I watch students some parts of a movie and I want them to predict what will happen.Consequently, it is a good lesson plan, well prepared and I congratulate my friends.

  7. My second evaluation will be about the lesson plan written by Fatma, Fikret, Begüm and Mesude. They selected the scenario in which there are Turkish high school students who are preparing for the university entrance exam. Their topic was modal verbs expressing possibility and their target skills were vocabulary, grammar and reading. I think, all of these skills are so prominent for their learner profile; therefore, their choice is great. They could integrate all these teaching points into the lesson plan effectively and professionally.
To begin with, I think the format of their lesson plan is quite appropriate for the teacher and the observer because it presents clear steps which set light to teaching and lesson. Therefore, the lesson plan serves the purpose of being a clear route for the teacher. I really like the given objectives because they are very well-formed and suitable for the lesson plan focuses. When I look at the objectives, I think the lesson will be quite informative and beneficial for the students who are preparing for the university entrance exam. In the procedure part, the steps of the whole lesson are organized properly and activities are also so various. In these parts, the types of interactions and descriptions are quite clear and there is no place for hesitation. Reading, paraphrasing and fill-in-the blanks activities are so useful for these students and they will gain important abilities by means of them. Perhaps, there might be a speaking activity which is a pair or group work for communication and interaction in class but this type of activity may not be so necessary because their primary focus will be the written university entrance exam. Generally, every activity lasts five minutes. I t seems a bit fast but still they are adult learners and this limitation can also be reasonable. Follow-up part is quite relevant and gives clues about another crucial grammar lesson for this student profile. The students’ previous knowledge, expected problems and solutions parts are so well-prepared and logical. In my opinion, this lesson plan is a good sample and product of an effortful study. Moreover, studying on it is a pleasure for me.

  11. Firstly I wolud like to comment on Özge, Nurten,Aycan and Begüm’s lesson plan. Their level is beginner and the age gruop is the young learners. Their focus is listening , speaking and vocabulary. Thus, the lesson is based on different learnings. Their activities are also varied. During the lesson there are many activites that can attract the students. Since the level is beginner, it is difficult fort he teacher to attract the students to the lesson but their activities are really good ones that the teacher can manege this. The warm up part is important in the lesson and our friend do this part really well because warm up activity is an enjoyable one and students can participate in the lesson with this activity. The subject ofthe lesson is the same as our “colours”. But they their activities, The way they teach is different from us. Thus, I have a chance to see different techniques about one subject. Actually they use diffrent tecniques very well in their lesson plan and they are appropriate fort he level of the students. Listening, Speaking part is both enjoyable and useful fort he students. The activities are very clear both for the teacher and students. The objectivs, rationlae very clear and realistic. The prior knowledge of the students can be easily understood from the lesson plan. The timimng of the activities are also appropriate fort he students and the follow up part is vey well prepared. Thanks our friends for their effort because it is a good lesson plan appropriate both fort he students and subject.

  12. My second lesson plan evaluation is for Begüm, Fatma, Fikret, Mesudes' lesson plan. Their student profile is the students who are preparing for the university exam and their subject is modals so their focus is grammar, reading and vocabulary. These skills are suitable for the profile of this students they are useful information. The organization of the lesson plan is very clear and it is an informative one. The activities are appropriate for the students and their level. And also the purpose of the lesson is important here. The activities are according to the students aim. The objectives and rationale are very informative, by looking them one can have information about the content of the lesson. In this way they are really good. The steps are also clear for the students and the activities are not boring one, they can attract students to the lesson. And the activities are suitable for the age of the students. They are not so simple fort he students’ level which is a good thing. The timing is also well prepared the transition between the activies are smooth, the studnets cannot have difficulty while passing from one activity to another. The follow up part is also effective in the process of the students’ learning. In conclusion, it is a good lesson plan thanks to our friends’ effort.

  14. I chose the scenerio of Özgül, Melek, Deniz and Seda. I wanted to evaluate this lesson plan because they preferred the same scenario as ours and the topic is ‘colours’ like in our lesson plan =) The lesson plan is for children from upper-middle class families who are between 6 and 8 years of age and are just starting to learn English. It is appropriate for both the observer and the teacher. The objectives stated at the beginning are covered during the activities in the lesson. I find the lesson plan well-prepared and the teacher can apply the lesson plan to the class just by looking at it because the steps and descriptions of them are clear. Only drawback about it is that, the teacher may get confused while trying to draw a mind map about it because order seems a bit complicated at first. As for the variety of activities, maybe because they are young and hyperactive learners, it lacks group work and other activities are between teacher and students. In addition, the aims of the activities are not varied, they seem to serve for the same purpose but they have a smooth transition except for the follow-up part. The follow-up part is somehow unclear and unrelated. In addition, it can be more colourful and creative because the learners are young and hyperactive, as a result, it can be an activity keeping them motivated and in control. Another drawback about the plan is timing because it was not specified so we can not make an assumption if all the activities can be applied in one go. Despite these drawbacks, I think this leson plan is really good =)) It is apparent that it was prepared with great effort and it covers almost all the parts a lesson plan should =))

  15. I will comment on the lesson plan of Şerafettin Ayan, Mert Can AYDIN, Elif ÇEVİK, Alp Zübeyir TEKGÜL. The lesson plan is designed for young learners and the topic is special days in Turkey. I liked the lesson plan because it is prepared in a well organized way. The lesson plan covers all the necessary details. The goal and objectives of the lesson are all clarified. For the vocabulary teaching part all the necessary steps are implemented in an appropriate way. The materials used in the lesson are colorful, which is nice for drawing students’ attention to the lesson. The power point presentation at the beginning of the lesson is a good way to introduce new vocabulary items as it includes both colorful pictures and technological support as well. The lesson plan is suitable for young learners; however as the learners mentioned in the scenario are hyperactive students, some additional activities which focuses more on bodily kinesthetic intelligence would make the lesson more effective. All the lesson is based on some written activities that asks students to do matching or write short answers. Although the activities’ levels are appropriate, students might get bored quickly. In this case some speaking activities or plays could be really helpful. As students get the chance to join the lesson more actively in this way, they would enjoy it much more. We can say that the less written assignment the better it is for the young learners- especially for the hyperactive ones- Finally the assignment is a good idea; it helps students to remember the new learned vocabulary items and use them in the following session while they are talking about what they learn from their parents.

  16. As my second evaluation, I wanted to comment on Alp, Mertcan, Şerafettin and Elif’s lesson plan =)

The lesson plan is for children from upper-middle class families who are between 6 and 8 years of age and are just starting to learn English. This time, the topic is Special Days in Turkey. Although the topic may be interesting and informative for the learners, I find it a bit challenging. What’s more, there is an activity about dates which can be even harder for learners.

There is not much to add about the format because the steps are clear and the teacher can apply the lesson plan and activities just by looking at it. The descripitons are concise but the objectives and raitonale part could be longer.

As for the activities, I find them creative and entertaining for the learners although they could be reflected more clearly for the teacher to follow more easily.

Another drawback is that, there is no group work, maybe because the learners are so young and hyperactive.

The timing is specified and it seems to be applicable for real classroom atmosphere. My favourite part in the whole lesson plan is the follow-up part because it encourages students to learn outside the classroom, giving the conscious that ‘learning is a process and a life-long experience’ =))

Although there can be some minor alterations, I think it is a good lesson plan and it was done with great effort like others =))

  17. For the second one I chose the lesson plan prepared by Gülşen Özsan and Canan Kılıç. Their students; level is elementary and they are Middle East Technical University Prep school students. The focus of the lesson is speaking. For the beginning part, I really appreciated the way objectives are written. There are five different objectives each of which clarifies the focus of the lesson in a good way. The warm up and pre speaking parts seem to be appropriate for a smooth transition to the lesson. However I couldn’t see the appendixes of the activities in the lesson plan; that is why I cannot make a comment about their appropriacy. The part when teacher makes students listen to soundtracks of three classic movies and wants students to predict which movie the soundtrack belongs is really nice and effective. It is an enjoyable activity which provides students with an interesting listening tool at the same time. Group discussions are also indispensable for the speaking lessons. I think it is a really good lesson plan which covers all the significant activity types for a good speaking and listening integrated lesson. The tasks of both students’ and teacher’s, the purpose of the activities, and timing are organized correctly. The contingency plan is related to the topic of the lesson and it gives students a chance to repeat the lesson in an enjoyable way. At the end of the lesson, teacher summarizes what have been done so far, which is an important ritual of a good lesson. I can say that the lesson plan is a well developed one in general. There is a small mistake however in the contingency plan part. There is 5 minutes allocated for contingency plan however contingency plan is implemented when there is extra time after all the activities are done. So, there was no need to appoint a time for this part, as it is determined spontaneously within the lesson.

  18. I study the lesson plan made by Neslihan, Sevda, Züleyha, Halenur and Hayal. I like their lesson plan because it is well-organized and clear. Their topic is appropriate for the beginner level of the students. Their material is modern and effective enough to draw students’ attention. This will make the class environment vivid, cheerful and enjoyable. The problems they may encounter during the lesson is well stated, and the solutions to these problems are effective. Goals, objectives and rationale are well-prepared and detailed. Precedure is also detailed and timing is enough. However, I’m not sure it will be applied to real classroom environment, because they aim at doing so many things in 45 minutes. However, I think without any interuption, they will achieve their procedure. The other problem with timing is that they gave 10 mins to contingency plan but I’m not sure puzzle activity will fill up 10 mins. There are some points that confuse me. I couldn’t get the interaction part;it is not clear enough. Their lesson plan also lack group work activity. However, it is good thing not to have a group work activity, because the students are very young. They may get distracted during a group work activity, so it could end up in a disaster. All in all, I like their lesson plan because it seems that they made a great effort to prepare it.

Secondly, I examine the lesson plan prepared by Betül, Şakir, Cuma and Harika. First of all, their topic is suitable for beginner level of the students, and their materials and activities are appropriate their lesson focus ‘vocabulary and listening. They are aware of the problems which may occur during the lesson, and their solutions to these problems are effective. Their goals, objectives and rationale are well stated and detailed. Timing is effective; they have enough activities to fill up 25 mins. The activities will not exceed the time I think. Activities lack group activity. However, it may be a good thing because the students are too young and they may get distracted easily while doing a group work. There are some missing points in their lesson plan. The procedure lacks contingency plan and follow-up parts. However, I don’t think they need a contingency plan because they will surely fill the 25 mins with the activities stated in the procedure. Finally, I like their lesson plan. With little adding ups, it will be a very good lesson plan.

  19. The first lesson plan that I want to comment on is the one that was prepared by Neslihan Bozoğlu, Sevda Aydın, Züleyha Ağırsoy, Hayal Akyıldız, Halenur Çankaya.

I think the lesson plan is appropriate for both the teacher and the observer. When I examined the lesson plan, I could easily imagine the lesson and the steps. I think the objectives are suitable, well formed and clear. The procedure part is also clear und easy to understand. This part is easy to follow and apply in a class. There are several useful activities in the lesson plan and they are appropriate for the level of the students and for the lesson. Also they are linked to each other, so they are all related to each other. In my opinion the timing is well prepared. It is realistic and suitable for the related part of the lesson. Also I approve the patterns of interaction. I found the follow up and closure part effective. I think it is a good lesson plan. Its rationale part is realistic, the learners' previous knowledge is specified clearly and the unexpected problems and their solutions are adequately specified.

The second lesson plan that I want to comment on is the one prepared by Melek Başdal, Deniz Hande Çakmak, Seda Can and Özgül Başaran.

It is another good lesson plan. The format of the lesson plan is very good. It is a suitable lesson plan for a teacher and for an observer. The objectives part is also good. I think it covers all the activities that are done during the lesson. The procedure part is so clear that it is easy for anyone to follow the lesson. Also there are various activities and they are related with each other. I believe in the timing. The timing that is given for the different parts of the lesson is appropriate for their part. The interaction part is clear and suitable. Again it is a good lesson plan and its rationale part is realistic, the learners’ previous knowledge is specified clearly and the unexpected problems and their solutions are adequately specified.

  20. I chose the lesson plan which Seda CAN,Melek BAŞDAL, Deniz Hande ÇAKMAK and Özgül BAŞARAN prepared to examine.
I think the format of the lesson plan is appropriate as its objectives, steps, activities and all other things involved in the lesson plan are told clearly and understood easily. Objectives are so suitable for the students’ level and activities are in harmony with the objectives. In my opinion, it is more difficult to teach children a language or another thing and the activities help that; their activities are both enjoyable and informative. For instance, if they wrote only the name of the color and put the color on the power point, students would tend to forget them more; however, thanks to the power point presentation my friends prepared, students have more chance to learn and remember in a more enjoyable way. Moreover, the activity in appendix A is an example of a good activity; it is proper for the students’ level. And also, these activities and what the students are supposed to do are told clearly in the procedure part; it is so detailed that even a person who does not see the activities can understand what are going to do in the class. I think timing was the biggest problem for us while preparing the lesson plan as there are lots of things while there is a limited time, but I see that my friends did timing very well. Another thing I want to add about the procedure part is that it is proper and possible but follow up part could be more related to the day’s topic; I do not see any other deficiencies in this lesson plan. And also, it is nice to calculate the possible problems which might be faced during the teaching process and provide some solutions to them and prepare the lesson plan considering that. Rationale and objectives are realistic and appropriate for the students’ level. Pre-requisite knowledge and intelligences addressed are stated clearly and properly. Apart from the comment which I made for the follow part, this lesson plan is a sample for a good lesson plan.

  21. The second lesson plan I want to examine is the lesson plan that Gülşen ÖZSAN and Canan KILIÇ wrote.
As soon as I started to read this lesson plan, the first thing which I realized is timing; duration of the lesson should be 35 minutes but I saw that my friends timed it as 45 minutes. This may be a problem for the lesson plan; however, it is not an obstacle for it to be a good lesson plan with its objectives, activities, materials used and so on. I think that they chose movies and speaking on them as main is quite proper for the students’ age and interests. Rationale and objectives are stated clearly and appropriate for the students’ level. And also, anticipated problems and solutions are realistic, so they are helpful to prepare the lesson plan properly. Their activities are also good and suitable for both the level and the skill focused. I’m not sure about this point but I want to add something about the procedure part. I know that ‘be going to’ form should be used while telling everything in the procedure part and I saw that my friends used simple present tense. As I said I don’t know whether it creates a problem for the lesson plan or not; I just want to add my opinion. However, generally this is a good lesson plan with all things involved in.

  22. The first lesson plan that I want to comment on is the one prepared by Aysun DELİKTAŞ, Helin BAŞAK, Sümeyye ATA, Ayaz BABAYEV. The lesson plan format is appropriate for both the teacher and the observer. An observer or a teacher can understand what is going on in the lesson by looking at this plan. The objectives part could have been more detailed as it doesn’t cover all of the activities that will be done during the lesson. However, the rationale part is stated very well because one who doesn’t have any idea about the lesson can understand what will be done throughout the lesson by reading that part. I find it really realistic. The goals are also stated well. The descriptions of the activities are very clear. Therefore, a teacher or an observer can follow the teacher and student activities by looking at the plan. There is a variety of the activities in the lesson plan; there are individual activities and pair works. There is a link between the activities, as they are appropriate and related to each other. Timings are clear and I think they are realistic. I approve of the patterns interaction. There are individual activities which are most beneficial when it is like that for these activities. Pair work helps student interact with each other and it is helpful for the students. The closure part is effective, I think. Since the teacher summarizes what have been done during the lesson, the teacher helps students overview the things. Follow-up task is also appropriate. The anticipated problems and solutions are adequately specified and the prerequisite knowledge is also specified well enough. I think that this lesson plan is clear enough, and there are many activities related to the topic. So, there is no need to add something or change anything completely. It is a well-prepared lesson plan!

  23. The second lesson plan that I want to comment on is the one which was prepared by Fatma BAŞKAYA, Fikret ARSLAN, Begüm AKÇELEBİ, Mesude CİVELEKOĞLU. The lesson plan format is appropriate for both the teacher and the observer. The observer or the teacher can understand what is going on in the lesson by looking at this plan. The objectives are relevant for the teacher. Again I see that this lesson plan doesn’t cover all of the activities like the other lesson plan I evaluated. However, things are clear and understandable from the objectives and the rationale. I find them really realistic. The goals are also stated well. The descriptions of the activities are very clear. Therefore, a teacher or an observer can follow the teacher and student activities by looking at the plan. There is a variety of the activities in the lesson plan; mostly there are individual activities, but there is a pair work for the contingency plan. There is a link between the activities, as they are appropriate and related to each other. They could arrange the transitions between the activities very well. Timings are clear and I think they are realistic. As I said there are individual works, but there would have been a group work or a pair work throughout the lesson to provide more interaction between students. I think the closure part is effective, since follow-up for the next lesson is appropriate in that it is related to the topic of the lesson. The anticipated problems and solutions are specified in a detailed way and the prerequisite knowledge is also specified well enough. They are all stated clearly and very well. I think that this lesson plan is clear enough, and there are many activities related to the topic. So, there is no need to add something or change anything completely. Again, it is a well-prepared lesson plan! =)

  24. 1-)I examined the lesson plan written by Melek, Deniz, Özgül and Seda. They chose the colours as a subject of their lesson plan. Their level is beginner and preparing plan and activities for beginners is very difficult and one can encounter many problems. Objectives and activities are suitable. The prepared activities are useful for the objectives. The activities are explained clearly. One can read the lesson plan and have a general idea and understanding about the way of using activities. There are many different activities in the plan. This variety makes the lesson plan more effective. The transition between activities is organized skillfully and timing for activities is well prepared. However, I am always against to prepare beginner lesson plans it is too basic and difficult to organize the activities. With this king of students you cannon use an effective contingency plan or you activate your activities according to plan.
2-) Secondly I examined the lesson plan written by Fatma, Fikret, Begüm and Mesude. In the scenario high school students prepare for the university entrance exam. The objectives of the lesson plan are suitable for the high school students. The activities are also suitable for the objectives. The variety in the activities makes the plan more effective. The plan is well organized and one can understand the steps clearly. The plan as a whole is understandable. However, the teacher can have some problems about timing. Each activity takes 5 minutes but it is impossible in a real classroom to do activities in a 5 minutes timescales.

  25. Firstly, I have chosen the lesson plan by Fikret Arslan, Begüm Akçelebi, Fatma Başkaya and Mesude Civelekoğlu.
    a) The lesson plan is really well- prepared and very suited for its aims meanly vocabulary and modal verb comprehension. Actually, lesson plan format is appropriate for the teacher and observer because with its steps are well- ordered in a logical way, but I think m friends should have focused on much more grammar than vocabulary because when we look at the topic that was required to be taught, we can see that grammar was a little weak compared with the vocabulary that should have been vice versa. However, it is also well- suited to teaching vocabulary lesson plan format.
    b) I think objectives are settled very well and properly because when we have a look at the activities in the appendix part, we can come across that there is appendix D activity that the students are supposed to choose correct vocabulary items which are involved in also objectives and this means that this activity is well- suited for the objectives. Moreover, there is an activity which students are supposed to set up the sentences again with the modals verbs without changing the sentence meaning and this shows that one of the objectives is successfully integrated into the activity.
    c) I think anyone who is just looking at the lesson plan can easily understand what should be done and how they should be done according to the process of the lesson because every detail about the steps of the lesson are given by enough explanations in the lesson plan. Moreover, anyone just looking at the plan can identify the students’ and the schools’ profile, prerequisite knowledge of the students and the main focuses of the lesson which make the observer and the teacher feel certain about the subject they are dealing with.
    d) I think the lesson plan covers various activities which are very useful and comprehensive for the students such as individual and pair work activities which aims to improve the students’ interactive skills.
    e) Actually, when we look at the activities from the beginning to the end, we can see that there is a slight link that connects the subjects of the topic to each other, for example, after the first reading activity, there comes out the identifying activity that students are required to identify the modals from the text, so we can easily set up a bridge with this reading activity and the identification of the modals.

  26. I preferred to evaluate the lesson plan prepared by Neslihan Bozoğlu, Sevda Aydın, Züleyha Ağırsoy, Halenur Çankaya and Hayal Akyıldız. Their lesson plan is on the scenario of beginner level students in the Sunshine Private School. Their selected topic is Seasons and Weather. Because the learners are very intelligent and hyperactive, choosing a topic and activities and making it attractive and enjoyable for the students considering their short attention span is very hard so I can say that in general they are quite successful in the lesson plan.
The lesson plan format is quite appropriate for the teacher and the observer because they are pretty successful in setting the objectives and rationale, defining the anticipated problems and possible solutions to those problems and also they put certain steps and explain what they will maintain each step in a clear way. Their rationale seems realistic because it explains teacher’s aims obviously and completely such as why the teacher uses PPP or what is the reason behind the teacher’ usage of feedback phrases as well done, that’s right etc. The learner’s previous knowledge is specified clearly in the lesson plan by remarking colours, basic action words and simple tenses which are suitable to the level of the students. The unexpected problems are also clearly described in the lesson plan and they also add the possible solution such as they plan to show model usage of the words in a meaningful context in case they have difficulty in using the new words. The objectives are set intelligibly but I think that it will take much more time for the students to control their focusing problems because they are so young to control themselves in a lesson hour so I find this objective a little bit inaccessible. In terms of activities, they presents many of them and these activities also have different interaction patterns like the activities they will work individually or with teacher as matching, fill in the blanks etc. but there I couldn’t see an activity requiring interaction between students, which is quite important for the young learners. The description of teacher and student activities are quite clear because when I read the lesson plan as an observer I completely understand what they purposes. There is also smooth transition between the activities. For example; the teacher first presents the PPP and makes them listen to some music clips and after that shows picture cards to convey the meaning clear and for retention. Timing is clearly described in the lesson plan but I guess that they will be pinched for time. The interaction is generally between the teacher and the students. However, I believe that there must emphasize on the interaction between the students much more so that the students would have the chance to be more active and would learn in an communicative atmosphere. I really liked the closure part because they are quite creative with wanting the students to bring clothes about weather and give them act out. This activity provides the teacher more clear assessment chance and make the topic permanent for the students. I think it is a good plan and they are quite successful in terms of responding the needs of the students; however, as I said before if I were, I would add an activity which encourages student-student interaction.

  27. As the second evaluation, I preferred the lesson plan prepared by Melek Başdal, Özgül Başaran, Deniz Hande Çakmak and Seda Can. Their lesson plan is also on the scenario of beginner level students in the Sunshine Private School and their theme is ‘colours’. Because it is hard to prepare a plan for the beginners hyperactive and intelligent, I find the topic quite suitable in terms of responding students’ needs.
The lesson plan format is fairly appropriate for the teacher and the observer because I see that they define all necessary points clearly like goals, objectives, rationale, unexpected problems and solutions and also the steps are clearly specified except for the time limits. The rationale is quite realistic because the aims of the teacher are compatible with the level and characteristics of the students. For instance; teacher aims to create an entertaining and enthusiastic learning atmosphere with the help of the song and this is quite realistic because young learners are attracted more with music or any other kind of visual and auditory material used in the classroom. The previous knowledge of the students is clearly described in the lesson plan and it is suitable and rational considering the level of the students. The unexpected problems and possible solutions to these problems are adequately specified. For example; the teacher thinks that student may feel nervous as they are beginners and considering this s/he tries to relax them by encouraging. This is a very well thought way to make the students relieve because they always need stimulation. The objectives are set relevant to the activities and they are well-formed but it seems like the teacher has just one objective because they all purposes to make them learn the colours and don’t purpose to make them gain any other skills. The lesson plan is quite clear in terms of the descriptions because when I read the lesson plan I have clearly understood what and in what way the teacher plans to carry on the lesson and activities. The activities seem enough but for this type of learners who are intelligent and hyperactive, there must be a little variety to attract their attention and to keep them in focus. In addition, the activities are maintain with the teacher-student interaction but I strongly believe that there must be activities which encourage student-student interaction which is crucial for language learning in a communicative atmosphere especially for young learners. There is smooth transition between the activities because listening, matching and painting activities follows each other respectively. In terms of timing, there is no defined time limit for the steps. The follow up task in the closure part is not relevant with the topic so it does not help the teacher assess the students. It could have been more creative and helpful for the students to contribute the retention. In general, it is a good plan and can be enough to respond to the student’s needs.

    f) I think timing is suitable for each activity and the step in the lesson plan, except for the repetition part. I do not think this student profile needs so much time for practicing pronunciation, so 5 minutes are much for the repetition part.
    g) In my opinion, the interaction between the students and the teacher, the students and the students are really well- established because when we come across the activity types and the interactions, we can see that pair work are settled as students to students activity or the PowerPoint Presentation is teacher to student activity, that means it is suitable for the lesson plan template.
    h) I think the closure part is really proper for the students because they really need some exercise on what they learn, so giving such effective homework really works.
    i) I think this is a very good, well- prepared and appropriate plan to be carried out. In my opinion, only the change can be adding some more exercises to the homework part because students may need to practice more in order to internalize the subject.
    j) I think rationale is realistic because the aims of the teacher are reflected there in a very realistic way and we can see that all the materials that the teacher is supposed to use and explain are the parts of the real life class environment.
    k) It is obvious that the students’ previous knowledge is appropriate and enough for them to be able to learn the modals in a reading text and reinforce their learning with multiple choice exercises.
    l) I think my friends can identify the anticipated problems very well and easily, they really know about their students’ profile, so they can set up empathy for them and anticipate the problems and solutions according to them.

  30. Secondly, I have chosen the lesson plan by Aysun Deliktaş, Helin Başak, Sümeyye Ata and Ayaz Babayev.
    a) As far as I examined the lesson plan, it is really well- prepared and linearly very organized for the teacher and observer at all because when we look at the steps of the lesson plan, we can see that it is based on the listening lesson plan template and this is because of the listening activity at the beginning of the lesson, ‘’Little Red Hood’’ which is the fairy tale already known by the students. Therefore, the teacher and the observer can easily follow the activity pace with the help of well- organized listening lesson plan template and activity steps.
    b) I think objectives are appropriate for the aims of the activities because the activities really reflect the performance of the statements given above the objectives, for example, the activity in Appendix A is based on clarifying the first objective ‘’use some vocabulary items related to sensing verbs’’ and the other objectives are also directly related to the activities which aim to specify the objectives.
    c) In my opinion, the teacher and any observer can easily follow the lesson plan pace because it was prepared in a basic order of listening lesson plan, so everything in it is settled down appropriately and anyone can understand what should be done, where it should be done and when it should be done. If the teacher is to forget or confuse about the lesson plan pace or the arrangement of the subjects of the topic, s/he can check it from the lesson plan template and can catch the schedule. Therefore, this lesson plan is very well- prepared for a teacher’s and observer’s appetite in order not to make them confuse about what they should do.
    d) I like the transitions between the activities, and especially the part using the names of the fairy tales that the students have already known. In the lesson plan the teacher shows the related pictures about the topic of the day and wants students to guess about the name of the fairy tale that should be dealt with as a subject of the day, so this is the best transition and lead in activity in this lesson plan, I think.

    to be continued....

  31. as the continuum of the previous one...

    e) I think the timing is well- settled and realistic because they are set up very properly and the students can manage to finish the activities and comprehend the meaning in enough time given by my friends, for example, there are many activities to do in the pre- listening part and so, timing is much more than the other activities in order make the activities proper in term of timing.
    f) I think the interaction between the teacher and the students, the students and the students are properly settled through the activities in the lesson plan. When there is an explanation part, the interaction is T to Ss and when there is a role play activity or pair work, the interaction is Ss to Ss, so the interactions are really trustworthy and believable.
    g) I think the follow up part is very effective in terms of making the students improve their listening and speaking skills because they are supposed to watch another fairy tale and then when they come to the class, they should tell the ending of the fairy tale to their friends, so this has so many influence in terms of assigning the comprehension of the topic and the skills.
    h) I think this plan is overall very perfectly prepared and I could not find anything to leave out, but if I were a member of this group, I would make the purpose part much more informative because some of the steps do not include enough purpose explanations. However, it is still an effective and well- prepared lesson plan.
    i) I think the rationale is set up very well and the activities make the rationale very realistic because when we look at the activities, we can see that all the things given as aims of the teacher are tried to be achieved there properly. Seeing this activity achievement in through the lesson plan, I can say that the rationale is realistic.
    j) I think the students’ prerequisite knowledge is reflected appropriately because before this final project I and my friends prepared a lesson plan like this lesson plan and our topic was also fairy tales and we use these kinds of previous knowledge and dependant on my experience, I can say that it is suitable for this kind of student profile.
    k) I think anticipated problems of the lesson should have been given much more detailed in terms of the problems that the students can come across. In the lesson plan there is only the technical problems that the teacher can come across, but the students can have problems with the subject and so, these problems should also be given by the teachers

  32. 1)I will comment on Melek, Deniz, Seda and Özgül’s lesson plan. The lesson plan is very well prepared. Especially the objectives are suitable for the students’ level of proficiency. The activities are also suitable and relevant to the objectives. The variety in the activities makes the lesson plan rich and effective. Everything is served clearly. We can easily understand the responsibilities of the teacher and what students do during the lesson. The communication between teacher and students are also prepared and explained successfully. I want to point out that timing is not organized in the lesson plan. We can’t understand how much time we have for each activity in the plan
2)Secondly I comment on Özge, Nurten,Aycan and Begüm’s lesson plan. The level of proficiency in the lesson plan is very low. Beginner level is difficult to prepare a lesson plan and find suitable activities. However, our friends use many different techniques and activities that can be effective in gaining attention of young learners and help them understand the plan subject of colors. The timing is also suitable for activities and the follow up is very successful. I think our friends are good at preparing effective lesson plans

  33. I want to comment on the lesson plan of Melek, Seda, Deniz and Özgül. Generally it seems very detailed because it shows us everything about the student’s profile, and others. The format of the lesson plan is very suitable and in the first part they show student profile precisely, and they indicate us the size of the class and the features of the school. Their lesson focus is clear. They also give references to us to see from where they took the resources. They indicate audio-visual elements; that is, anybody who looks at this lesson plan can see how to apply it to class. They write their anticipated problems, and they evaluate it precisely; that is, they are aware of their needs. The goals, objectives and rationale of this lesson plan is very clear, and they tell them exactly, and anybody can understand why they prepare such a lesson plan; that is, they set up the objectives very well. As for the procedure part, they do not have timing, so it can be problem when the teacher applies it to the classroom, but they show us the interaction part and purpose of the stages very well. They also give the instructions precisely. Their activities are suitable for their lesson focus. To sum up, it is a good work, thank you all!!!

To sum up, it is a good work, thank you all!!!

  35. For the first evaluation I chose the lesson plan of Melek,Deniz Hande,Seda and Özgül.First of all they chose a topic which fits very well to the level of there students.Young learners and colors. This is a really good choice. The plan is clearly prepared except the time organization may be.The different parts are well described and it seems to me very workable. They defined their objectives clearly.I also liked their activities. They are colorful and appropriate for young learners.May be It could iclude a group work since every activity is between teacher and student.İt would bring more action in the class and the young learners love action since they are so energetic and hyperactive.
The lesson plan includes also unexpected problems and reasonable solutions for them.I liked it very much.
All in all it is a very good work and I think except a few micro points which can be changed,It is a lesson plan which can be used in a class.I liked it very much.

  36. For the second evaluation I chose the lesson plan of Fatma ,Begüm , Fikret and Mesude.
I think the lesson plan is very good organized and it fits it aims. Each step is well ordered and easy to follow for the teacher.I liked the format very much.
Activities and objectives fits each other very well. The variety of the activities is also very appropriate.İt includes not only individual work but also pair work.I think this variety of activity should be involved in a lesson plan since otherwise the students may be not as much interested as this way. They could be get bored of the monotonous style of activities, which could affect their interest in the lesson.
The timing is also perfect ı think. They gave not to much time for every activity. However I think It is enough since the student are high school students. They have enough previous knowledge to do this activities within the given 5 minutes.
The lesson plan also includes expected problems with reasonable solution.
In my opinion this lesson plan is very well prepared and shows us how much our friend learned this semester.I liked it very much.It seems to me nearly professional.

  37. -I examined Canan Kılıç and Gülşen Özsan lesson plan. It was a speaking lesson aimed to use the vocabulary items learnt the previous lesson. The topic was movies and the students were elementary students at METU Prep. School. The materials they used and the audio-visual aids were good and effective. The anticipated problems were effectively handled. I just have some concerns about the students’ not being able to speak. I think, this problem is overlooked. Also, I couldn’t see any appendix and the time assigned for the lesson was 45min. The objectives of the lesson were realistic and could be achieved. Making students guess the movies by soundtracks and posters, visuals could be effective and I liked their strategies very much. The group activities, discussions and act –out assignment as follow up enhanced their topic. The only thing that could be reinforced is that the teacher can give more instructions at the beginning of each activity and I think giving handouts of pre-activities at the end of lesson as follow-up isn’t a good idea. When doing the activities the students should be provided with handouts. On the whole I found their lesson plan quite enjoyable, effective and student-based.

  38. I examined Fikret, Begüm,Fatma and Mesude’s lesson plan. It was arranged as a vocabulary lesson integrated with reading and grammar. The topic was teaching of modal verbs with the help of a reading passage. The students were pre-intermediate preparing for YDS in public high schools. The topic and the activities addressed to students were suitable to their level and age. The objectives were quite accessible but the anticipated problems could be more specified and more effective solutions could be found. The Lead in was usual greeting and I think they could do something for smooth transition. They could ask some questions and raise the students’ curiosity. I think, this gaining attention part was overlooked and they didn’t explain the goal of the lesson and what the students were supposed to do at the beginning. The lesson plan on the whole was very well arranged and the activities were good. I liked their timing the activities they provided feedback and guidance for their learning which I liked very much. Also, the contingency plan was very good and prolific activity. As for the activities, the fill in the blanks activity, paraphrasing activity were appropriate for the students who are preparing for the exam. I can say that on the whole it was a more conventional lesson. The only thing I could criticize may be that they could have found more creative and entertaining, group activities to enhance learning. This would also make the lesson more colorful.

  39. I study the lesson plan of Melek, Deniz, Seda and Özgül. they have choosen the scenario which is about a private school in İzmir and young learners of this school. their topic is ''Colours'' and I think the topic is suitable for students' age. The format of the lesson is proper they have arranged the parts clearly and you can understand what is going to happen in the class after each activity. my friends have written objectives very clearly. they explain all steps in this part. we can understand content of the lesson plan by having a look at objectives but we should look at the order properly because they have some disorder. However, I think, setting time limits is one of the crucial points and it should have been described in the lesson plan. I really like the activities including painting because young learners will love this. Except for the follow up part, every activity has a smooth transition in my opinion. Follow-up part should be more clear and relevant. From a general overview, I can easily say that this is a good lesson plan which has been prepared with great effort.

  40. Secondly, I want to comment on Gülşen and Canan's lesson plan. they have chosen the scenario of students whose level is elementary and who are Middle East Technical University Prep school students. The focus of the lesson is speaking. For the beginning part, I really appreciated the way objectives are written. There are five different objectives each of which clarifies the focus of the lesson in a good way.I couldn’t see the appendixes of the activities in the lesson plan; that is why I cannot make a comment about their appropriacy.Group discussions are also indispensable for the speaking lessons. I think it is a really good lesson plan which covers all the significant activity types for a good speaking and listening integrated lesson. The contingency plan is related to the topic of the lesson and it gives students a chance to repeat the lesson in an enjoyable way. I think that they chose movies and speaking on them as main is quite proper for the students’ age and interests.Their activities are also good and suitable for both the level and the skill focused.

  41. The first lesson plan I am going to evaluate is the one which is prepared by Fikret Arslan, Begüm Akçelebi, Fatma Başkaya and Mesude Civelekoğlu.
The topic of the lesson plan is modals and they integrate reading, vocabulary and grammar. Vocabulary is taken as the primary skill. The lesson plan format is ok. It is well-organized. Objectives are stated clearly, the steps are quite orderly and all the appendices are included together with the answer keys.
As I stated earlier, objectives are clearly stated in accordance with the students profile as they are expected to learn grammar and vocabulary. The aim of the lesson is to provide sts with necessary vocabulary and grammar knowledge for the written exam they are preparing for. The activities included in the lesson plan are quite useful and relevant to the objectives. I mean, they are enough to meet the sts’ needs.
Steps are described quite clearly and in a detailed way, so I think anyone can easily understand what is going to be done and how they should be implemented in the course of the lesson.
The lesson plan includes various activities which are very useful for the students such as individual and pair work activities which helps sts improve their communication and speaking skills.
Transition between activities is ok. All the activities are related to each other and they are made connected to each other. For example, after the reading activity, sts does a modal activity related to the text.
I think, timing is suitable for each activity. The time is divided equally for each step, but I do not think it has to be equal all the steps. Some steps may need more time while some need less.
For this kind of student profile, I think there is not much need for extensive interaction and communication. They are expected to learn grammar and vocabulary so they must mostly focus on reading. It is partially applied in the lesson plan.
In the closure part the teacher gives homework to sts and I think it is good. Because learning vocabulary and grammar needs exercise and homework will provide it.
I think this is a very good and well- prepared lesson plan. It is quite appropriate for the sts profile who are preparing for a written exam. I cannot see anything to add or leave out.
The rationales are realistic. They are given in accordance with the sts profile and the lesson objectives.
I think that the students’ previous knowledge is appropriate and enough for them to be able to learn the modals in a reading text and practice them with multiple choice exercises.
I think the anticipated problems are well identified and specified. They are really likely to appear during the lesson. The solutions proposed for them are good and enough to solve the problem. They are invented logically.

  42. The second lesson plan I am going to evaluate is prepared by Aysun Deliktaş, Helin Başak, Sümeyye Ata and Ayaz Babayev .
The topic of the lesson is little red hood which is quite suitable for young learners and they integrate listening, speaking and vocabulary. But speaking is taken as the primary skill. This lesson plan format is also ok. It is well-organized. The steps and parts are clear and you can understand what happens in which part.
The objectives are stated very shortly. I think this part could have been more detailed. However they are clearly stated and relevant to the activities.
The descriptions of the steps and activities are very clear. Therefore, a teacher or an observer can easily understand the tasks of the teacher and students by looking at the plan.
The variety of the activities is ok. Activities are various in the lesson plan, there are individual and pairwork activities. The activities are of the kind that does not bore the beginner sts. Transition between steps are very good. There is link between activities, and they are related to each other.
I think, the closure part is very effective. In this part the teacher summarizes what have been done during the lesson. Follow-up task is also appropriate for it will be appealing to young sts.
The rationales are stated in enough detail and I think they are quite realistic. But like the objectives and goals parts, prerequisite knowledge, anticipated problems and solutions for them are not adequately specified and clearly stated.
I think that this lesson plan is clear and there are various activities related to the topic. But, there is still need for some alteration. I think goals, objectives, prerequisite knowledge and anticipated problems parts should have been more detailed and clearer.
