Lesson Plan Self Evaluation (to be done individually)

SELF-EVALUATION OF LESSON PLANS
You need to report on the difficulties that you have had during the process of lesson plan preparation, the limitations that you have felt during the preparation of the lesson plan, the points that you would like to change about your plan, the benefits that you think you have gained out of the lesson planning process.

  1. Since we get accustomed to preparing lesson plans from the beginning of the term, the preparation of the lesson plan was not so difficult for me. And also before preparing the lesson plan, we learned how to do a lesson plan in detail in our course. Applying the rules to the lesson plan was easy for me. Apart from these advantages, the preparation of the lesson plan was in groups not individually, this situation affected the process. In collaboration, the decisions about the preparation were made easily and quickly. Since we are among group members, different ideas emerged, while preparing it which make the process much easier especially while defining the activities for our beginner level. In conclusion preparing this lesson plan is not difficult for me. When it comes to its benefits, I learned very well how to do a lesson plan by practicing it one more time in this course. The situations given to us are real ones and our lesson plans are according to these situation. We were given the situations beforehand, and we chose one of them, which make the preparation more useful for us. Actually in this preparation of the lesson plan there was no limitations, we choose the subject, level and prepare our lesson plan according to our own wish. Everything was perfect in the process and the output was very useful for me, because I can say that now I feel experienced in preparing lesson plans.

  2. Firstly, I should say that time of lesson plan was shorter than I thought it to be. It was one of the difficulties , we have met while preparing our lesson plan. On plan you can set the times for each step or activit, but when it comes to apply it on a real class, you can not do the activities you have mentioned on the plan. Sometimes, you can meet some unpexpected situations that may prevent you applying the lesson plan. That is my personal thought. Time is a limit for us while preparing the lesson plan. I find our activities very effective and applicable for an effective English Teacher. Preparing this lesson plan gained our group a good experience because I think we did it professionaly. We also prepared lesson plans for our other courses. Thanks to these lesson plans we know what to write and where to write them in a lesson plan. This experience will help us in our career in the future.

  4. While we were preparing our lesson plan, I think, the main matter was deciding on the topic. We tried to choose the best topic which was suitable for our student profile. As our student profile was young, we had difficulty in what kind of activities we should use because some activities we thought could be challenging for the young learners. Thus; we had to cancel some of the avtivities. Another problem is timing. We prepared some activities but we sometimes thought that these activities would be appropriate for a real class. Actually we did not have much difficulty because we had prepared lesson plans for the other courses in that sense preparing lesson plan was not a big deal.I found preparing lesson plans useful because they will help as when we become a teacher. They are a kind of practice for teaching.

  5. We have been doing lesson plans since the spring term began and we have not encountered so many problems while preparing our lesson plan for this course. however; of course lesson plan preparing is a long-term process and different activity finding sometimes bored us but we liked to study together as a group. while preparing it, some internet problems made us mad, for example; video download or low internet speed. apart from these small problems we had no problems. I dont think that we should change anything in our lesson plan because I believe the activities, timing and pace are suitable for the level of the students. I think after doing this lesson plan we have learned many things for example finding creative and attractive activities for young learners, arranging timing and pace, how to warm up students, giving suitable homeworks etc. Preparing lesson plan prepares us to be effective teachers.

  6. Firstly I must say that we did not prepare a lesson plan as a group. Everybody prepared their own lesson plans because, as we experienced before while preparing our group blog, coming together with other group members would be difficult for us and it would definitely make us lose time since it is always difficult to arrange a time appropriate for everybody. However, preparing the lesson plan within a group would be advantageous and easier because in the group everybody would make contribution and we would be able to find more creative ideas. Also preparing the lesson plan individually left the whole task on only one person. Another problem for me was that the time to prepare my lesson plan was limited because of other projects and exams. The limited time did not give me chance to find creative and interesting ideas, activities and techniques for the lesson. If I had more time, I would try to prepare a more creative lesson plan by searching for interesting activities and materials. Preparing a lesson plan was of course useful. It was like a practice of teaching. we practiced how to warm up sts, how to get them into the mood for lesson, how to get their attention, how to make tem practice what they have learned. While preparing the lesson plan we imagined as if we were in a real classroom and applying the lesson plan we were preparing.

  7. I haven't encountered a problem except the limitation of time.In real classroom I don't think it is a good idea to apply an integrated lesson to just 35 min. It would be better if we just focused on one skill for a short lesson.Arranging activities to time was difficult because if we decide to make a group activity either it won't be possible for all groups to do the activity or it will take the half of the class time. And as we did our lesson plans individually,it was difficult to evaluate my lesson plan from a different point of view.Maybe it would be more creative if we had done it as group. But still it was good and enjoyable experience to manage all things on my own.

  8. Preparing lesson plan is something we have been used to since the beginning of this term. As we have another course in which we are supposed to prepare lesson plan, it is clear for us to do it. But it was a bit difficult for us to decide what topic to choose. There are a few good scenarios and we chose the beginner students in Sunshine Private School in Izmir for we thought it would be more appropriate for us according to our experiences in ELT courses. Since our students were beginners, we preferred 'special days in Turkey' as our topic because it is a concept which we can attract students' attention with lots of pictures and enjoyable activities. We could have no difficulties in finding pictures to match with the special days because there is a symbol for each day. We prepared a colorful presentation which did not make us feel bored. So preparing a lesson plan was enjoyable for us

  9. Preparing a lesson plan is not a new thing for us as we have been prepared lots of lesson plans since the beginning of the term and also we have got enough information about that because before preparing the lesson plan, we learned how to do a lesson plan in detail in our courses; elt methodology or instructional principles, so I don’t think that we had many difficulties in our preparation process. However, in my opinion, the greatest problem was the time; it was not enough to integrate more than one skills. When we think that a lesson is 45 minutes normally, we see that it is difficult to involve many skills in the lesson in such a short time. Nevertheless, we tried to do our best and we integrated grammar, vocabulary and as our students in our scenario were the students who prepared for yds so we focused on multiple choice and several vocabulary and grammar activities; I think our activities which we chose for our lesson plan were well and proper for our students’ level and aim. I want mention another weakness of a lesson plan, but not only of our lesson plan. We are asked to write these lesson plan very detailed; we have to write even students’ and teacher’s greeting or students’ taking handouts which the teacher distributes; I find that a bit unnecessary. Moreover, sometimes, we can meet some unexpected situations that might prevent us from applying the lesson plan. Despite all these things, I think that every teacher should know prepare a lesson plan and we have learnt what and where to write them in a lesson plan thanks to these lesson plans we have prepared so far and I think that we used all our experience to prepare this lesson plan.

  10. I must confess that we didn't spend so much time for the lesson pan because we have already known how to prepare a lesson plan thanks to this course and elt methodology course. Therefore, we didn't have any difficulties wile preparing it. We also add some theoric and practise information to our previous information with the help of this lesson plan project. I think we are more experienced in preparing and good at it. Preparing the lesson plan as a group was really useful because we had a chance to do brainstorming and this made the lesson plan more suitable for the project.
The most important thing for a teacher is to program the lesson. This can be by preparing a lesson plan. Therefore, lesson plan is really important for us and we have more experienced in prepparing it with the help of this course.

  11. First of all, there were no limitations for the topic and the level of the students of the lesson plan. We chose the level and the topic according to what we wanted to do. There were some situations given to us and we selected between them. Therefore, it made the lesson plan preparation process much easier for us. We chose beginner level and decided our activities according to the level of our students. We had enough experience for preparing lesson plans this semester. So, we had an idea to what we were going to do. We prepared our lesson plan as a group where we could share different ideas to make our lesson plan better. That’s to say, as a group we achieved more than what we could do as individuals. I can say that we didn’t have much difficulty while preparing our lesson plan. We could arrange everything; firstly we defined our activities according to our level of students. And then, we wrote down our goals, objectives, rationale, and the other problems and solutions. After that, we wrote the steps of the lesson plan procedure. We didn’t have problems while defining them; as being four people, each person suggested an opinion when somebody else couldn’t. I think there is no point that I would like to change about our lesson plan because it illustrates the every part of the lesson very clearly. For the benefits of preparing this lesson plan, I can say that we had an experience for preparing lesson plan one more time which made us experienced enough to prepare lesson plans. The process was useful and helpful for me and all the other members of our group.

  12. we have already got accustomed to preparing lesson plans. From the beginning of the term we have prepared three lesson plans and we got enough experience. When we gathered with my friends to prepare lesson plan, we firstly looked at the scenerios. We chose students who are preparing for YDS exam. However we got shocked when we saw the level of students, it is written pre intermediate. We thought that this level isn't appropriate for the YDS students. At least they can be intermediate. However, we couldn't give up this scenerio. We found appropriate activities for these students but we have problems while arranging the time for the activities.I think that time is too short so we gave up some of the activities which some of my friends suggested. At last we decided every activity and we finished our lesson plan.
This is a new experience for me because I haven't prepared lesson plan for pre intermediate and YDS students before.

  13. While we were preparing our lesson plan, the main problem was choosing the topic. We can not think about clearly how we can make the students fit with the lesson plan objectives. As our student profile was young, we could not find and prepare the activities that fit them best. It was very challenging for us to balance it.Thus; we had to omit some of the exercises. Another problem is about time. It is a good experience for us to prepare a lesson plan but it was very tiring to prepare it with group. I think, tthis kind of actrivities should be done indivually so that everybody can face with everything in a lesson plan.

  14. I have prepared many lesson plans since the beginning of the term. As it is my 3.rd year, I have some pre knowledge on how to write a lesson plan, that is why I haven’t experienced much difficulties when was preparing the lesson plan. The biggest issue was the topic selection process. Once you decide on the main topic of the lesson and find a relevant material it gets easier to complete the rest. Our lesson was about “Little Red Riding Hood” We found a video of the story and designed the rest of the lesson accordingly. It was enjoyable as there were many visual colorful materials. As we wanted to apply all the necessary activities, the duration of the lesson is a bit more than supposed time. I think that we prepared a nice applicable lesson plan; however it might be a bit more detailed if we had much more time. I think as prospective teachers we are ready for organizing our own lessons in a proper way thanks to all these lesson plan preparing assignments although we have some little mistakes in total.

  15. First of all, the time period that we were supposed to prepare and complete this lesson plan project and blog project was not very relief and easy process for all of us because we had so many other projects and final exams which were as challenging obstacles in front of our way through finishing this overall term peacefully. Actually, while we were deciding which topic we should choose for our lesson plan, we had some difficulties to select a proper subject as a main theme for our selected scenario; we thought a lot and finally, we decided on colors in order to make the subject enjoyable and interesting to the taste of the students. After that, we were supposed to settle down the lesson focus appropriately and we decided to arrange the lesson focus steps like listening, speaking and vocabulary, so the most difficult times had passed before we set our lesson plan template and steps that we should deal with while we were reflecting our aims and thoughts to form this lesson plan. Afterwards, when it came to preparing some funny and interesting activities to reinforce our main subject to make students much more curious about the topic and involved in the learning process. This process was really enjoyable, I mean, trying to be as creative as we can to manage gaining attention from the students such as picking up some colorful pictures from the Net and serving them via PowerPoint Presentation to the students’ appetite. Actually, while I was working with my friends, we had really great and funny time; I guess it is because of our entertainment success even though there are very complicated and hard works to manage. Finally, this project made me gain the capability to accomplish a hard work in a very limited time and it also helped me to reinforce my performance to create a much more successful and effective lesson plan with excellent group members…

  16. As the first step of our lesson plan, we decided on one of the beginner level scenarios as a group and organized our research route in the light of it. We cooperatively researched our materials which we use in our project and determined our lesson plan procedure according to the requirements of the given scenario. We chose “colours” as our lesson topic for young beginners who are at the age of 6 and 8 and tried to create an enjoyable, attractive and informative lesson which is full of games and activities for them. We made regulations in our lesson plan related to our learners’ characteristics and needs because they were hyperactive and had short-attention span. When it comes to the difficulties, actually, I didn’t have any difficulty in this lesson plan project except for my busy schedule due to the final week. Thanks to my previous knowledge and experience which I gained through ELT Methodology Course, I already knew the process of preparing a lesson plan. In addition, throughout this course, I learned new and beneficial information which provide me with a clear pathway and important clues. Therefore, I could achieve this project without any major problem with the assistance of my friends in my group and I think we could manage to design a creative and effective lesson plan for beginners. I don’t feel restricted throughout our lesson plan because we chose the activities, games and the steps of our lesson however we desired. When I thought in an empathic manner, I would have wanted to participate in such a class if I were a new beginner student. I really like our lesson plan which is the product of our effortful work so there isn’t any point which I want to change about it. This lesson plan preparation process contributed to my experience on working cooperatively and interactively in a group without hesitating to express my own ideas. Moreover, I put my theoretical knowledge into practice by means of it. At the same time, I could improve my research, creative thinking and organization skills so as to select creative and colourful activities for beginners. As a prospective English teacher, I really gained prominent experiences which would shed light on my profession.

  17. The topic choice was the first challenge and after overcoming this problem then the application of itinto the classroom was hard.To try to find the activities to apply our topic and our students reaction. We had to care about them. But the biggest challenge was to state our objectives. We had to care about each side of our activities and how they would be useful, what were our aims with those. The intelligences we aimed were important parts of our plan. We used to prepare lesson plans for just 15 mins, so that to make a 45mins lesson plan was difficult and challenging at first I felt overloaded also because the our time was limited but thanks to its being a pair work, It didnt happen as I thought it to be.

  18. Firstly, our main obstacle was the limited time we were supposed to prepare the lesson plan because it was during the final period and we had to complete many other final projects so we had some difficulties to find an acceptable time for all the group members. However, as the group members we get along well, it wasn’t much hard to arrange the program. Secondly, we had some difficulties to find a scenario for our lesson plan and it was not easy for us to choose the one which we can be more creative and take pleasure while preparing. However, after some brainstorming process, we decided on the one which was for beginners who are intelligent and hyperactive. We worked in a cooperative way in order to accelerate the process and specified the demanded needs. The topic of our lesson plan was -colours- which is one of the colourful and enjoyable topics for the beginners. Also, we added many attractive elements to our plan such as pleasing activities and games. This step was also very enjoyable for us because we searched for colourful and lovely pictures for our presentation and interesting games for our hyperactive students. We generally didn’t have a difficulty in the preparation process of the lesson plan because we did many of them during the semester for our methodology course and also presented in the classroom. In addition, because we worked with a group, we had many creative ideas and had the opportunity to suggest those without any hesitation, thus I believe that we made a good job and I am satisfied with our plan. Furthermore, I can say that, I did never feel restricted because I was content with myself and my group friends taht we can prepare a good lesson plan and I also didn’t feel restricted in terms of recourses because we could get whatever we want to use in the class so I am thinking about it now but cannot find anything to change in the plan because we did our best. With this project, I experienced working in a group as a cooperative and interactive way and also I reinforced my knowledge about preparing a lesson plan which is matching the expectations, needs and characteristics of the students. I also believe that it contributed my research skill, arrangement and organization ability and it created a pathway for my further studies and teaching life.

  19. First of all, if there was a problem, it was the limited time. We prepared our blog during a period which was full of other projects, various exams and heavy work load. But me and my lovely group members arranged a suitable meeting day for all of us and started to do our best for the lesson plan =)) Next thing to do was finding a scenario for our lesson plan and finally we agreed on the one for little hyperactive children from Izmir, coming from upper-middle class families. We thought that we can add so many entertaining activities and materials in order to enrich the lesson plan and we can have fun during the preperations. Afterwards, we brainstormed as to which topic we can teach and what we can add as activities. Our resolution satisfied each of us: we were going to teach colours to our young learners which seemed to be an entertaining and 'colourful' topic. We also included many activities and games to keep our little hyperactive students in control and motivated to learn. I 'especially' enjoyed this process because as I was hyperactive when I was younger, I tried to remember those days and tried to figure out what I would like most as activities =)) While finding appropriate materials and games, we also encountered many other topics and I felt that it will help me during the preperations of other projects and homeworks, lesson plans =)
Generally speaking, I didn't find it hard to prepare a lesson plan maybe with the help of our previous knowlegde we gained at ELT Methodology course 262. Additionally, as we were working as a group, I felt more comportable and free to make mistakes because together with my friends, we could choose the best one and could correct all the possible mistakes. Another factor contributed to our lesson plan was creativity of our group members, this not only helped us improved the lesson plan but also we had fun =))
I believe that we made a good job and I am satisfied with everything. I would not make even a single change if I had chance.
As for what I gained during the process; more than anything, I can say friendship.I want to add something personal about my group friends, during the preperations one day I was feeling so bad and they sent me to my dormitory to rest a bit and arranged a more suitable day to do the rest of the lesson plan. I feel grateful for their friendliness and politeness =))In addition, I improved my interactive and cooperative skills as well as ability to corporate a lesson plan suitable for characteristics and features of learners as well as utilizing appropriate materials.

  20. The main and the most frustrating handicap we encounter was the limited time and the dense period of other exams, studying etc. Because of this, we really had a hard time to find a proper meeting time to prepare the lesson plan. But somehow, we managed to come together and worked really hard to come up with a nice lesson plan. The next difficulty was to find a proper subject. At this point, we agreed that a wise decision on the topic is the key aspect of this activity and spent most of our time brain-storming on the subject. After eliminating the topic-candidates and deciding on a single one, the rest was fairly easy. Since at least we knew what to do at this point, creating interesting activities and preparing necessary material for them was fun.
I can say that I learned better to work with a group and saw that it is actually a hard thing to agree on a single topic with several people. For me, preparing a wise lesson plan is twice as important than the putting it into real life in the classroom. Of course you should have skills to transfer the knowledge to your students in a proper and efficient way, but the background of this transfer and the preparation phase is the key aspect for a successfull teacher.

  21. preparing lesson plan is not something different for us. We are all familiar with doing it. For me the only problem was getting together.because we have many other things to do we had some diffuculty arranging a time. Other than that it was a useful process that we will face with a lot in the future. being a grup also was very relaxing. asking soem other people while doing some work is good, I think. Also preparing lesson plans make us creative because it forces us creating some activities.

  23. I always found it difficult to write a lesson plan. Especially writing objectives and rationale would be the hardest parts for me. However, this time while writing a lesson plan, I didn’t feel too many difficulties. It was enjoyable because we prepared lesson plan for beginner level. I found it easier to write objectives for the beginner level. Activities were also creative and fun, so it made the lesson plan more enjoyable. The only challange I can say was timing. Because during lesson, something can happen to interfere with our pre-determined lesson procedure. To prevent this, it is good to prepare a flexible lesson plan and timing. I think we handled this well. We didn’t have any other difficulty while preparing our lesson plan at all.

  24. Actually preparing a lesson plan is not a new thing for us since we are accustomed to preparing a lesson plan from our methodology course, but we hadn' prepared an integrated lesson plan until this one. Therefore, we had some difficulties. The first difficulty was choosing the topic. After we chose the topic, we tried to decide on which skill we would use and how we would use them. After we decided on the skills, the rest was easy. I think the most important limitation for us while preparing the lesson plan was that we didn't fully know how we should prepare an integrated lesson plan. I don't think there is something that I want to change about our lesson plan. The benefits of preparing this kind of a lesson plan are that we got accustomed to prepare an integrated lesson plan and think on a given scenario.

  25. We have many difficulties while preparing lesson plan. The first difficulty that we encounter is the time of meeting. Group members have very little suitable time for the plan so we decided to do the plan alone. Another important difficulty is finding or creating suitable activities for our objectives. Especially for listening lesson we have difficulty in finding suitable recording for our objectives. For example we selected idioms and expressions for the subject but we searched on the internet to find suitable recording for our objectives and proficiency level. Because we prepared many lesson plans throughout the year we could overcome the difficulties easily. The organization of the lesson plan is very easy when we decide the most suitable activities. While preparing these plans we can understand the techniques and strategies that teachers use to provide effective understanding of the subject. The most important difficulty in preparing lesson plan is timing. The activities and stages must be prepared according to this timing and this is the most difficult part of preparing lesson plan.

  26. Preparing lesson plan seemed very difficult to me until this term. We prepared a lot of different lesson plan and we learned how to make lesson plans. We have many obstacles during the plan preparation but then we solved them easily. We find suitable activities for our objectives. This is the most important part of preparing lesson plans.

  27. Preparing a lesson plan was not a hard work for us, as we do many lesson plans throughout the semester, but we had difficulty in sometimes preparing integrated lesson plan. At first, we cannot decide which skill can be used then we had difficulty in integrating 3 main skills into one type of lesson plan after we choose our main skill. Then, we tried hard to integrate them, but I believe that we have managed it. The rest was easier after we decided our activities because we knew the rest about the lesson plan precisely. We could write our objective, and rationale easily, as we did some activities in our lesson throughout the semester. The procedure part took time, but in the end we could manage it. I believe that writing these lesson plans are very useful for us, as they help us to learn how to decide which type of activity can be used in our lessons, and how to manage timing.

  29. Preparing a lesson plan is nothing we were inexperienced with. For several times we had to prepare it for another course in this semester. However, we are not professionals in this area , so we have naturally still problems in preparing a lesson plan.First of all the decision about the topic was not easy for us.Since there were a lot of appropriate topics, we have difficulties in choosing the best one, for which we could arrange logical activities.
The arrangment of proper topic, activity and student level is not as easy as someone imagine.Sometimes you find an interesting topic but if you could not combine it with a logical and proper activity it is not effective in a lesson.
However, after preparing some lesson plans during the semester we learned the mainly clues and were not so confused as we were preparing this lesson plan.
Working in a group was very helpful since we all make suggestions on the topic etc.It was more effective than to work alone because there were a lot of ideas which we could combine at the end.

  30. I really like preparing lesson plans but i want them to perfectly fit into the topic or the student profile. In the process of preparin this lesson plan, i had problems with arranging the time. It was not a problem if the there is time left owing to the contingency plan. If the time is not enough, then here comes the problem. Sometimes, in the rationale or purpose parts, i had to write same things and this irritated me a little bit. The activities i chose was long and a bit boring, but this was because of the student profile and needs. I did my best to find the most useful activities for the students. Another part i am obsessed with is the interaction part. I wanted the interaction to be the main part of the lesson and i did whatever i can to make it real. Other than do on your own parts, i could manage to integrate the communicative skills into the lesson.
